The idea

What is Longevity Escape Velocity?

What if medicine could add years to your life faster than time takes them away?

Longevity Escape Velocity describes a hypothetical threshold where advances in medicine extend remaining life expectancy by more than one year for every year that passes. Imagine one year passing—and scientific progress adding more than one year to your remaining lifespan.

We do not know whether—or when—humanity will reach it. It would not mean invulnerability or guarantee eternal life. But it raises a powerful question: how can you take better care of yourself today while staying informed about tomorrow?

The speed of escape

How fast are we closing the gap?

LEV needs progress that adds more than one year of remaining life expectancy for every year that passes. Here is what researchers say about today’s pace — and when they think we get there.

Today

Below escape velocity

≈ 3 months added per year

By some estimates, science currently adds about three months to your lifespan every calendar year. More than one year of research is still needed for each additional year of expected life — well short of escape velocity.

2030

Optimistic estimate

Optimistic threshold

Futurist José Luis Cordeiro predicts LEV around 2030: “If we make it to 2030, we will basically live long enough to live forever.”

2040

Expert forecasts

Broader expert window

David Wood predicts the watershed before 2040; Harvard geneticist George Church tips 2037. Many researchers consider these timelines speculative.

Estimates are drawn from public statements by the named researchers and futurists. They are not forecasts by this project, and no timeline for LEV is scientifically settled.
